- 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil
- 6 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
- 1 (28-ounce) can whole peeled tomatoes, with juices
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
- 1/2 cup fresh basil leaves, torn

Preparation
Step 1
Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
Step 2
Add minced garlic and crushed red pepper flakes, and cook until garlic is golden brown, about 1 minute.
Step 3
Add whole peeled tomatoes with their juice, breaking the tomatoes with a spoon.
Step 4
Bring to a simmer, reduce heat to medium-low, and cook, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens, about 30 minutes.
Step 5
Season with salt and pepper to taste.
Step 6
Stir in torn basil leaves just before serving.

Chef's notes
For a less spicy version, reduce the amount of crushed red pepper flakes.
If you prefer a smoother sauce, use an immersion blender to puree the sauce after it has thickened.
This sauce pairs beautifully with penne pasta.
